Bulldogs have Bison’s number: The Bison will look to snap an eight-game losing streak against the Bulldogs, whose 54-14 win last year boosted them to 30-10 in the all-time series. Howard’s last victory over South Carolina State was a 23-9 decision in 2002, when current defensive coordinator Ray Petty was the head coach.

Defense steps up: One season after surrendering 50 or more points five times, the Bison rank third in the MEAC in total defense (304.6 yards per game) and fourth in the Football Championship Subdivision in tackles for a loss (59). DL Sackie Kerkulah and LB Keith Pough rank fifth and seventh, respectively, in FCS in tackles for a loss with 17 and 151 / 2.

McGhee’s bringing it: Howard freshman QB Greg McGhee received MEAC rookie of the week honors for the fourth time this season after completing 21 of 35 passes for 242 yards and two touchdowns in Howard’s 35-28 overtime victory last weekend against North Carolina A&T. McGhee, who has emerged as a strong candidate for MEAC rookie of the year, leads all FCS freshmen in total offense (216 yards per game). He also has completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,429 yards and 12 touchdowns and ranks second on the team in rushing.
