The Marine Corps Marathon opened its transfer program Tuesday, an unusual process for a large race that allows registered runners who cannot participate this year to transfer their entries to others who want to run.

Registered runners also can transfer to the Marine Corps Marathon 10K at no cost.

“We really wanted to give runners an opportunity to transfer slots because things happen: injuries, business trips and even deployment,” said Tami Faram, Marine Corps Marathon public relations coordinator. “The transfer program allows them to give a highly coveted spot to another runner.”

The online transfer forms, available at, must be received before Sept. 23. New runners will be required to pay a $30 transfer fee and to complete the transfer process before Sept. 30.

New participants registered through the program will be eligible for the finisher certificate and awards and will be included in participant results.

The 36th Marine Corps Marathon, which sold out 30,000 spots in a record time of 28 hours, will be held Oct. 30.
