Noon Glass Bowl, Toledo ESPNews/ WFED-1500 Mids 3-2; Rockets 3-3

fast start: Navy came out flat in last week’s 35-7 loss at Duke, leading Coach Ken Niumatalolo to say it was one of the most disappointing performances from the Midshipmen in a long time. Navy can ill afford another slow start against Toledo, which has won the last two games in the series and is tied for ninth nationally in turnover margin (plus-1.3) and tied for 13th in turnovers gained (15).

defensive improvement: The Midshipmen had allowed a combined 29 points in their previous two games before last week’s clunker in Durham, N.C. They still rank 29th in the country in scoring defense, allowing 21.2 points per game, and 38th in red zone defense. The unit draws a difficult assignment Saturday in Toledo running back David Fluellen (right). The senior has rushed for 846 yards and nine touchdowns on 129 carries.

Backup Qb shuffle: The search for a backup quarterback continues for Navy, which has lost regular No. 2 John Hendrick for the season following a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered during practice. The first backup listed on the depth chart is freshman Will North, and Tago Smith, another freshman, is No. 3. The Midshipmen had used junior Kody Akers as the backup in mop-up duty against Duke but decided to go in another direction this week.
