Now in its seventh quadrennial as an Olympic sport, snowboarding has morphed from novelty to part of the bedrock of the Winter Games. American halfpipe rider Shaun White, vying for his fourth gold medal at his fifth Olympics, will be the headliner even if, at 35, he can no longer be assumed to be the favorite. The sport continues to progress, and 1620s — jumps with 4½ rotations — will be commonplace at the big air and slopestyle competitions.
