The biggest moment of Day 3 at the Beijing Olympics came early, when Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin, one of the United States’ top medal hopes, did not complete her opening event, the women’s giant slalom, skiing out on her first run. Her teammate Nina O’Brien later suffered a scary crash in the second run and was being transported for further evaluation.

The United States earned a silver medal in the team figure skating event, but the Americans are still searching for their first gold of these Games, while Olympic veterans from France and the Netherlands made history.
