Local figure skaters, speedskater, selected for Youth Winter Games

Laurel’s Thomas Hong, 14, and Rockville’s Michael, 16, and Rachel Parsons, 14, will represent the United States at the Jan. 13-22 Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck.

Hong, a four-time U.S. national champion from the Potomac Speedskating Club, won the lone male qualifying spot in short track skating at a recent event in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.

The Parsons siblings, who train at the Wheaton Ice Skating Academy, won the U.S. novice title in January after their first season competing together. They finished ninth at a recent International Skating Union Junior Grand Prix event in Poland.

Nearly 1,000 athletes from around the world will attend the inaugural youth Winter Games, which follow the first youth Summer Games that took place in Singapore in August.
