With an eye toward helping the Washington Kastles to a record winning streak, Venus Williams plans to compete in two home matches for the city’s World TeamTennis squad this summer rather than one.

The former world No. 1 player had already committed to compete in the Kastles’ July 9 match against the Boston Lobsters. But team officials will announce Thursday that she’ll also take part in the July 8 match at Kastles Stadium on the Wharf, given what’s at stake in the season opener against the New York Sportimes.

With a victory July 8, the three-time and defending WTT Champion Kastles would match the Los Angeles Lakers’ string of 33 consecutive victories set in the 1971-72 NBA season. It’s a benchmark that Kastles owner Mark Ein and his squad have pointed toward since completing their second consecutive undefeated season last year.

Tickets to the July 8 and 9 matches featuring Williams go on sale Thursday at 10 a.m., along with matches that will bring former No. 1 Andy Roddick to town (July 11) and include the Kastles’ latest acquisition, former No. 1 Martina Hingis (July 17, 20, 22 and 24), who will be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame on July 13.

The upcoming season marks Williams’s fourth with the Kastles. She was named MVP of the 2012 WTT Finals after winning all three of her sets in Washington’s 20-19 championship victory over the Sacramento Capitals.

Individual tickets for the Kastles seven home matches are available through Ticketmaster; for season tickets, call 202-483-6647. The 2013 home season runs July 8-24. All matches will be played at Kastles Stadium on the Wharf, 800 Water St., along the city’s southwest waterfront.
