With her team in the midst of a four-game losing streak and a 1-5 record to begin the 2012 season, Washington Mystics General Manager and Coach Trudi Lacey announced Wednesday the team has waived starting point guard Dominique Canty and replaced her on the roster with guard Shannon Bobbitt.
Bobbitt, who won two national championships at Tennessee, was a second-round pick by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2008 and spent last season with the Indiana Fever. The 5-2 guard averaged 3.9 points and 1.7 assists per game in 2011.
Canty started five of the Mystics six games this year, including last Friday’s 76-70 loss to New York. But Lacey had shied away from using her in the fourth quarter much, instead relying on guards Jasmine Thomas and Matee Ajavon in crunch time. Canty, a 14-year veteran brought in to provide Washington more experience after last season’s 6-28 campaign, was averaging 2.8 points and one assist per game.
