After a four-hour closure, the George Washington Memorial Parkway’s northbound lanes near Reagan National Airport have reopened.

The northbound side of the George Washington Parkway remains closed near Reagan National Airport, causing major delays in that area, officials said.

Drivers are advised to use Route 1 or Interstate 395 and the southbound side of the parkway to get to the airport.

Officials have said the road will remain closed for “an extended period” but have not given any exact times.

Two people were hurt early Friday after their vehicle crashed into a tree along the northbound side of the George Washington Parkway near Reagan National Airport.

The road is closed and will probably remain shut for much of the morning, while accident reconstruction crews are on the scene, according to U.S. Park Police.

The crash happened about 6:30 a.m.

Both people in the vehicle were taken to hospitals — one with critical injuries and the other with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, park police officials said.

Traffic along the parkway’s north side is being turned around at Marina Drive. The southbound parkway is not affected.

Transportation officials warned that the northbound side of the George Washington Memorial Parkway near Reagan National Airport will remain closed for an “extended period” of time after an earlier crash.

It was not known whether anyone was seriously hurt.
