The Baltimore-Washington Parkway’s southbound lanes remain closed Monday morning after a fatal crash.

Few details were immediately available as to what caused the crash, which is under investigation. The U.S. Park Police said one person was killed in the incident.

Sgt. Eduardo Delgado, a spokesman for the Park Police, said one person was pronounced dead at the scene. He said several crashes also occurred after the initial crash but that no one was seriously injured in those incidents.

Officials said drivers should expect an extended closure of the parkway.

Shortly before 9 a.m., transportation officials said the roadway’s southbound side was still closed as crews were investigating the crash. They gave no indication as to when the roadway would reopen.

The crash happened near US 50. Traffic is being diverted to MD 202, and officials said delays start before MD 250.

Drivers should avoid the area.
