A man was found dead on a Metro track bed at the Rhode Island Avenue station Sunday evening, authorities said. Metro Transit Police and D.C. police are investigating the circumstances.

Metro spokesman Ian Jannetta said Metro’s Rail Operations Control Center received a report shortly before 5 p.m. of an unauthorized person on the tracks. An initial report to D.C. fire officials was for an injured person on the tracks, but they responded to find the man was dead.

“It is not yet known whether a train made contact with the decedent,” Jannetta said.

Red Line trains shared a track between the Union Station and Rhode Island Avenue stations during the investigation.
