Algiers is the only part of New Orleans across the Mississippi River from the rest of the city. Because of that, most folks don’t think about visiting it. Algiers Point, the second-oldest neighborhood in the city, is without a doubt New Orleans’ best-kept secret.

Meet Danny Monteverde

Danny is a sixth-generation New Orleanian who tried living in Dallas once but quickly came home. He spent several years reporting for the Times-Picayune and New Orleans Advocate before moving to WWL-TV. Like any good local boy, he can walk to his mom’s house from his place.

Algiers Point

Algiers Point/Canal Street ferry
It might not be the quickest way, but a ferry ride across the Mississippi is an easy and relaxing way to get to this West Bank neighborhood, where you can walk everywhere.
Canal Street Ferry Terminal, New Orleans, LA 70130
The Crown & Anchor
This English pub is a few blocks away from the ferry landing. Walk through the blue police call box (or phone booth) to get in.
The Crown & Anchor, 200 Pelican Ave. New Orleans, LA 70114
Rosetree Blown Glass
Sure, you can buy some blown-glass products at this studio and gallery. Or you can take lessons and make your own. Or do both.
Rosetree Blown Glass, 446 Vallette St. New Orleans, LA 70114
Congregation Coffee Roasters
Tired of exploring? Stop at this quiet, locally owned coffee shop for a cup or a bite from a menu of sandwiches and other items. While you’re there, you can also grab a bag of coffee beans and have them ground for you.
Congregation Coffee Roasters, 240 Pelican Ave. New Orleans, LA 70114
Old Point Bar
The granddaddy of the Algiers Point bars. It’s been around forever, has live music of various genres (jazz to country to rock) almost every night and priceless views of the city from the river levee.
Old Point Bar, 545 Patterson Rd. New Orleans, LA 70114
