To escape the tourist traps and club scene of South Beach, head up Collins Avenue a few miles north. The drive is lined with Art Deco hotels from Frank Sinatra’s days in Miami Beach. The beach has a boardwalk trail, picnic tables, grills and tree canopy for shade. There’s also a large Argentine community, so be sure to try the bakeries and the empanadas.

Meet Suzette Laboy

Suzette has lived in Miami since she was 5 and embraces its constantly warm but often finicky weather (hello, random afternoon rain showers). But even given that, she prefers to be outdoors, exploring Miami one park and neighborhood at a time.

North Beach

North Beach Bandshell
Built in 1961, this open-air amphitheater, with its Miami Modern (or MiMo) architecture, is on the National Register of Historic Places, hosting concerts and entertainment all year long. As a small on-site monument shows, the bandshell sits on what was Miami Beach’s first structure, built in 1875 to rescue shipwrecked sailors.
North Beach Bandshell, 7275 Collins Ave. Miami Beach, Fla. 33141
Norman’s Tavern
This sports bar and local hangout has been around since 1970. There are pool tables and TVs at Norman’s, making it a great spot to catch a soccer match. There’s also a 28-room boutique hotel upstairs. For now, you can enjoy outdoor dining.

Fifi’s on the Beach
This discreet seafood restaurant is just a block from the water. Try the catch of the day — whole or filleted — either fried, grilled or steamed. One of its suppliers is a Cuban former free-diving champion.

Blue Beer Garden
This beer garden is easy to miss, which makes it a local favorite. Nestled around the pool area of the boutique New Hotel, Blue Beer has a variety of locally brewed beers, as well as cocktails and a gastropub.
Blue Beer Garden, 7337 Harding Ave. Miami Beach, Fla. 33141
Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine
This may be a family-owned chain, but the servers really do make you feel at home. Just a few blocks from the beach, this location of Las Vegas is a great spot to grab a coffee or breakfast. Or, for a heavier lunch after hitting the beach, try the baby churrasco with white rice and beans.

Scott McIntyre
Scott is a Miami Beach-based contributing photographer for The Washington Post who has been proud to call himself a Floridian since 2011. He has photographed a variety of stories throughout the state and beyond, but his favorite focus has been finding the people, locales and ideas that make Florida the unique place that it is. While some like to make fun of Florida, he likes to celebrate it.
