Inside this California hospital, a ‘constant battle’ against covid-19

In the winter of 2020, coronavirus cases in California were surging to record highs and hospitals were overrun. At St. Mary Medical Center, a hospital in the desert town of Apple Valley, the ICU had burst its capacity. Patients underwent triage in a parking lot tent, and the hospital’s lobbies and hallways became makeshift coronavirus wards. Exhausted staff feared the worst was still to come.
