With accumulating snow predicted to streak into the region leading up to and during Wednesday morning’s commute, it’s safe to say most of the school systems in the region will close. In fact, the closings are already starting to come in (note D.C. public schools are already closed for winter break).

We see a very high likelihood of the major school systems closing, with the possible exception of those in Southern Maryland, where snow amounts will be lighter and frozen precipitation may change to rain by late morning. It’s possible these areas just see delays or even open on time if conditions aren’t too bad early Wednesday, when officials make their decisions.

The bigger wild card is what the federal government will do. We lean toward at least a delay and unscheduled leave/telework option but wouldn’t be surprised if it decides to close — we give that slightly better than 50-50 odds.
