LONDON — “Heartbroken” Thomas Markle has a message for his daughter, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, her husband, Prince Harry, and well, reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II .

Appearing in a video live interview from California, Markle spoke with hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid about the current state of his relationship with his estranged daughter. During the interview, Markle claimed he has had no contact with Meghan and received no reply to a recent letter and multiple text messages sent to the Duchess.

“Every day I try to text her, I just haven’t received any comment back,” Markle said, adding that he was disappointed in the lack of response from his daughter and was unsure why the rift was happening. “I keep asking her to respond back to me, I haven’t got any response back.”

“So you’ve just been completely cut off? Ghosted?” asked Morgan, to which Markle replied: “Ghosted like you, yes.” Morgan recently expressed his horror at being ghosted by Markle’s daughter once she began dating Prince Harry. According to Morgan, he believed he and Meghan Markle were friends and then “never heard from her again" — much to his disappointment.

When asked if he had a message for his daughter and Prince Harry, Markle said, “I love you very much, you’re my daughter and we would like to hear from you.

“Whatever differences or problems we have, we should be able to work them out. We’re family. So, please reach out to me."

Markle also confirmed that he has still has not met Prince Harry, whom Meghan married in a widely watched ceremony at Windsor Castle earlier this year. “The unfortunate thing about my daughter and Harry is that they believe everything they read in the papers,” he said.

“There has to be a place for me, I’m her father — and I will be the grandfather to her children.” The couple’s first child is due in the spring and will be seventh in line to the British throne — although the baby will not automatically assume the title of prince or princess. “I’m certainly hoping they produce a beautiful baby,” he added.

Talking about the queen, with whom the duchess is expected to spend Christmas Day, Markle expressed his hope that Queen Elizabeth would help mend the growing rift between him and his daughter that has left him feeling shunned. “I would appreciate anything [the queen] can do. I would think that she would want to resolve the family problems,” Markle said.

Asked about other negative stories regarding his pregnant daughter, Markle sprang to her defense, saying: “She’s always been polite to everyone. I can’t see her being rude to anybody. She’s always been a very controlling person. That’s in her nature."

The controversial interview sparked fierce backlash online, with many criticizing Markle’s latest attempt at getting in touch with his daughter. Some referred to his actions as manipulative and abusive, while others said they felt sorry for him.

“Cannot agree with this more. His words and actions speak only about his needs, his wants, his entitlement, what he deserves. Nothing about her. The manipulative, emotional abuse that Thomas Markle is subjecting his daughter to via the media is appalling," read one of many tweets.

“Thomas [M]arkle is a lovely guy, I feel for him. So sad that his daughter is ignoring him. The interview was heartfelt and he has said nothing wrong in this interview," read one more sympathetic tweet.

Asked how he thought the situation might end, Markle went on to say: “I’m hopeful soon something will be resolved and we’ll be talking. This can’t continue forever. I’ve reached out to her and I need her to reach out to me.” He also shared that he has apologized to the royal couple for his past behavior.

On Twitter on Monday morning, Morgan empathized with Markle, writing: “Thomas Markle received no payment for today’s interview,” as criticism of their talk poured in. “It’s a very sad situation that needs to be resolved. Diana would have hated it,” Morgan wrote.

During the controversial interview, Markle said he has only given five interviews on his daughter. For the royal couple, that could be five too many.
