The Israeli military has warned the United Nations that more than a million people in northern Gaza should evacuate south within 24 hours, a move that the United Nations considers impossible “without devastating humanitarian consequences,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the U.N. secretary general, said in a statement. The United Nations “strongly” appealed for the order, which came just before midnight local time, “to be rescinded avoiding what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation,” the statement said. Israel has continued to pound the Gaza Strip in retribution for the Hamas attacks and is expected to launch a ground incursion soon.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Amman, Jordan, after his day-long visit in Tel Aviv. He is expected to meet with Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Authority, and King Abdullah II of Jordan in Amman on Friday.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz, the leader of the opposition National Unity party, have formed a unity government, which they said will only pursue actions concerning the conflict.
The Hamas attack killed at least 1,300 people in Israel and wounded about 3,300, authorities said. Palestinian officials said more than 1,500 people in Gaza have been killed and some 6,600 injured as a result of Israeli strikes.
The Israeli military described the situation at its border with Lebanon as “relatively stable” Thursday after trading fire with Hezbollah there in recent days. The flare-ups have fueled fears of a wider spillover.

Israel-Gaza war

The Israel-Gaza war has gone on for months, and tensions have spilled into the surrounding Middle East region.

The war: On Oct. 7, Hamas militants launched an unprecedented cross-border attack on Israel that included the taking of civilian hostages at a music festival. (See photos and videos of how the deadly assault unfolded). Israel declared war on Hamas in response, launching a ground invasion that fueled the biggest displacement in the region since Israel’s creation in 1948.

Gaza crisis: In the Gaza Strip, Israel has waged one of this century’s most destructive wars, killing tens of thousands and plunging at least half of the population into “famine-like conditions.” For months, Israel has resisted pressure from Western allies to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave.

U.S. involvement: Despite tensions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and some U.S. politicians, including President Biden, the United States supports Israel with weapons, funds aid packages, and has vetoed or abstained from the United Nations’ cease-fire resolutions.

History: The roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and mistrust are deep and complex, predating the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948. Read more on the history of the Gaza Strip.
