An outbreak of crack use is alarming officials and tarnishing Brazil’s carefully cultivated image ahead of two major sporting events.
Nov. 14, 2012 A suspected crack user who is feeling sick is coaxed by a social worker into being taken to a shelter in Rio de Janeiro. Health workers make daily rounds, as part of a program run by the Social Action Secretariat, looking for the suspected addicts to remove them from the streets. In the preceding week, 290 suspected addicts were taken to nearby shelters. Felipe Dana/AP Buy Photo
