Russia will have spent more than $2.5 million per athlete competing at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, even using President Vladimir Putin’s very conservative estimate. An opposition watchdog group says it’s closer to $12 million per athlete. And those figures don’t include the billions of dollars spent on infrastructure projects such as the airport, railroad line and port. Either way, it’s by far the most ever spent.
