World War II “martyr village” in France, California wildfires, Powerball winners, Eid al-Fitr and more.
Aug. 6, 2013 A young boy looks inside a rusted car body in a square near the remaining walls of buildings in the French village of Oradour-sur-Glane. Six hundred forty-two men, women and children in the village were massacred by soldiers of a German Waffen-SS Panzer division, who destroyed the entire village on June 10, 1944. A new village was built nearby after the war, but the remains of the original have been maintained as a permanent World War II memorial and museum. Pascal Rossignol/Reuters Buy Photo
