Woman Killed By Bomb Had Been Stalked

Associated Press
Saturday, January 22, 2000; Page A02

MEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 21—Sandra Berfield was so afraid of a stalker that she slept with a knife and installed a surveillance camera in her apartment, according to newspaper reports.

Berfield, 32, may have let her guard down when she opened a package left at her door Thursday in Everett, a Boston suburb. A bomb inside exploded, killing her.

Police searched the home of her alleged stalker, Steven Caruso, but refused to name him--or anyone else--as a suspect today.

Berfield sought a restraining order against Caruso, 44, in October 1998 after her tires were slashed. Caruso was jailed for several months for violating the order and recently released.
