Home & Garden: House Calls Home & Garden

Design Solutions

Add coziness with a warm wall color, such as Bleeker Beige by Benjamin Moore.

Maximize the water view by moving the TV to the opposite side of the room.

A cowhide rug adds texture and visual interest.

An ottoman can be used as a coffee table, a footstool or extra seating.

Replace curtain panels with textural woven shades for light control and privacy.

Create an area for conversation by grouping two chairs, a small table and a pull-out sofa.

Add task lighting around the room with lamps in various sizes.

The Challenge

There is no family room in Clementine Fujimura's Annapolis home, so her family uses the guest room for watching TV. Fujimura would like to turn the 18-by-12-foot room into a fun hangout for her sons and a cozy space for overnight guests. She's looking to add charm and take advantage of the water view, which is being blocked by the television.

The Solution

By rearranging the furniture to showcase the view and bringing in texture, pattern and new furniture, designer Tracy Morris turns the space into a comfortable place for the whole family (and guests) to enjoy.
