    When I first got on the Web, I loved hitting sites at the other end of the world. But then I noticed that I had more use for news from Ballston than from Bangkok. I live here, after all. I also discovered that local-neighborhood sites-by governments, civic associations or homeowners' groups-are both numerous and often highly useful. (To wit, the "Neighbor's Cat Missing" headline on one such site.) How numerous? After setting a few guidelines (recently updated sites only, no developers' ads, no chamber-of-commerce brochures), we came up with more than 120 of these pages. So take a walk around the block.
