Since 1947, India and Pakistan have struggled over the beautiful mountainous region of Kashmir. While India controls much of the region, Pakistan has never dropped its claim that its Muslim majority should be allowed to join Pakistan or form their own independent state. As Kashmiri separatists have stepped up cross-border raids in recent years and months, India has massed more than a million troops. The result is a volatile stalemate between two nuclear powers.
