Government inside the beltway isn't all that switched control from Democrats to Republicans in the 1994 elections. Voters handily favored the GOP for governorships as well. The races below are among this year's hottest contests.

Alabama
Incumbent: Gov. Fob James (R)
Illinois
Open Seat: incumbent Gov. Jim Edgar (R) is retiring.
California
Open Seat: incumbent Gov. Pete Wilson (R) is term-limited.
Massachusetts
Incumbent: Acting Gov. Paul Cellucci (R)
Colorado
Open Seat: incumbent Gov. Roy Romer (D) is term-limited.
Minnesota
