Audio Excerpts: What Rep. Burton Left Out

Tuesday, May 5, 1998

Rep. Dan Burton (R-Ind.), chairman of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, released transcripts of Webster L. Hubbell's prison telephone calls that Democrats said were excerpted to cast Hubbell in a negative light.

The following are audio and text excerpts of a March 25, 1996 conversation between Hubbell and his wife in which they discussed whether he should file a counterclaim against the Rose Law Firm, and how doing so could affect Hillary Rodham Clinton. Listening to the audio portion requires the RealAudio player.

Suzy Hubbell: No. I want you to. I am the one that bears the brunt of this up here, I am the one that has to explain this to [Clinton aide] Marsha [Scott]. She says you are not going to get any public support if you open Hillary up to this ... well by public support I know exactly what she means. I'm not stupid.
Webb Hubbell: And I spent Saturday with you saying I would not do that. I will not raise those allegations that might open it up to Hillary. And you know that. I told you that.

Suzy:Yes. Then I get all this back from Marsha who is ratcheting it up and making it sound like if Webb goes ahead and sues the firm, then any support I have at the White House is gone. I'm hearing the squeeze play.
Webb: So I need to roll over one more time. ... Now Suzy, I say this with love for my friend Bill Kennedy, and I do love him, he's been a good friend, he's one of the most vulnerable people in my counterclaim. OK?

Webb: Hillary's not, Hillary isn't, the only thing is, people say why didn't she know what was going on. And I wish she never paid any attention to what was going on in the firm. That's the gospel truth. She just had no idea what was going on. She didn't participate in any of this.
