In the early 20th century, the Olympics absorbed an organization of winter sports known as the Nordic Games. Some sports have remained since the first official Winter Olympics in 1924, while others, such as the winter pentathlon, have come and gone. In 2014, a dozen new events will be added to the Games in Sochi.
*Final numbers for some sports were unconfirmed as of Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, and reflect quotas set by organizations governing the sports. For some events, whole teams may be counted as single participants.
