Modern Pentathlon Outlook

The Washington Post
July 19, 1996

Date: July 30

Venues: Wolf Creek Shooting Complex
Georgia World Congress Center
Georgia Tech Aquatic Center
Georgia International Horse Park

Events: Men's individual.

Gold medals awarded: One.

Format: In one day, men will compete in five disciplines: shooting (10-meter air pistol), fencing (epee), swimming (300-meter freestyle), equestrian (jumping) and running (4,000-meter cross-country run). U.S. roster: Michael Gostigian.

U.S. outlook: Gostigian could sneak into the top three, but it's not likely.

Others to watch: Russian Dmitri Svatkovsky, 22 -- and already a two-time world champion -- is among the favorites, along with France's Sebastien Deleigne, Peter Steinmann of Switzerland and Cesare Toraldo of Italy. Vlachelsav Duhanov of Latvia could be a surprise medalist.
