    Package Deal

    October 9, 1998

All of the various express-delivery services have useful Web pages that will estimate costs and shipping times, but figuring out who's going to get your box of goodies from Ashburn to Zanesville takes so much time, it's often easier just to pick up the phone and call whatever company broadcast an ad on your TV most recently. Enter SmartShip, yet another of those fantastically useful (and free) price-comparison sites. Just type in your package's weight and the Zip codes of the origin and destination of your package, and the site will near-instantly generate a chart showing the rates for next-morning, next-afternoon and two-day shipments via FedEx, Airborne Express, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service. Spending $15 to have a one-page letter overnighted to a destination three blocks away has never been easier.
