The data that fuels the fastest cars in the world
At Oracle Red Bull Racing, speed is everything, on and off the track.
On a twisting track in Melbourne, Australia, the lead driver for Oracle Red Bull Racing (ORBR) is approaching the final lap when rain starts to pour. As the track turns dangerously slick, he faces a crucial decision: Should he pull into the pit, sacrificing precious seconds to switch tires, or should he press on?
“In racing split seconds — milliseconds — count,” said Melissa Arnoldi, EVP and GM of AT&T Business. “And that’s what AT&T is all about. Speed.”
He doesn’t make this choice alone. All over his car, hundreds of sensors track everything from tire pressure to fuel performance, relaying that information over thousands and thousands of miles to ORBR’s UK headquarters, allowing a team of over 800 technicians, engineers and coaches to help the driver make the right call in near real time. In a sport where the difference between victory and defeat comes down to milliseconds, ORBR requires exceptional connectivity — and so they rely on a fast, reliable network, powered by AT&T Business, to keep them in touch even when the race is halfway around the globe.
To learn how data is reshaping motor racing, we sent software engineer and motorsport fanatic Neha Sridhar on a behind-the-scenes tour of ORBR HQ, where she got a first-hand look at everything that goes into preparing for the next race.
