Summer is a chance to unwind and make new memories. Just two hours from D.C., Berkeley Springs offers the perfect respite from city life, complete with outdoor adventures, a unique arts scene and natural warm springs.
“You can feel art in the heartbeat of Berkeley Springs – it’s all over the place,” said Jordan Warren, executive director of the Morgan Arts Council, a nonprofit in Morgan County dedicated to uplifting artistic creativity.
The Morgan Arts Council’s Ice House is a community art center that serves as a staging area for a variety of art-centered events – from concerts and community theater productions to gallery shows and arts education programs. This year’s summer concert series includes performances of bluegrass, reggae and the blues.
Visitors to Berkeley Springs can also take in the outdoors by witnessing spectacular views of rivers and mountains or exploring the many trails of Cacapon Resort State Park, a 6,000-acre destination in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle.
“One of the biggest things that Cacapon State Park has to offer is the mountain bike trail system,” said Alex Teixeira, the owner of Trail Depot, an outdoor clothing and equipment shop in West Virginia. “There’s over a dozen trails in place now and two dozen more miles of trails are going to be installed over the next two and a half years.”
No trip to Berkeley Springs is complete without a visit to Berkeley Springs State Park, home to the town’s mineral spa, where the spring water flows at a constant temperature of 74.3 degrees. The park’s spa services, which include massages, baths and saunas, are the perfect way to relax on a summer day.
