Video: Goalkeepers Leading the Charge for Progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals
Global Leaders Unite to Imagine a Better World – and Take Action to Make That World a Reality
This year marks the halfway point of the Sustainable Development Goals, and today, we’re only on track to meet 12% of these ambitious goals. At a time when progress is going slowly, Goalkeepers emerge as the guardians of a world that aspires to health and equity. Organized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the 2023 Goalkeepers event brings together global visionaries dedicated to championing the Sustainable Development Goals. This gathering illuminates the remarkable stories of Goalkeepers who have shattered barriers and are working in their communities to provide a blueprint for a better world.
These Goalkeepers imagine what that world could look like:
Thoko Elphick-Pooley, a passionate leader on a mission to improve global health, is focused on ending Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). She wants to see a world where “we can celebrate the eradication of a disease.” As the Executive Director of Uniting to Combat NTDs, she understands the power of her voice and discusses her journey as an advisory group member of Goalkeepers.
Calum Worthy, a vocal advocate for the climate movement and a rising star in the entertainment industry, would like to create a world where “climate activists are no longer needed.” He reflects on his role as a storyteller within the Goalkeepers community and shares his optimism for future generations using their voices and platforms to speak out for a more sustainable future.
Sallie Krawcheck, an influential force in the world of finance, wants “women [to] have more money and power.” She shares her insights and experiences as a speaker at Goalkeepers, and strives to ensure that women have the ability to take control of their financial futures.
Ashu Martha Agbornyenty, a midwife in Cameroon and the founder of the For Mom and Baby Foundation, is the winner of this year’s Changemaker Award. She imagines a world where “midwives are globally valued.” She recognizes the importance of Goalkeepers in garnering international support for maternal health, and discusses how this event has provided opportunities to collaborate with like-minded individuals and drive positive change.
Thoko Elphick-Pooley, Calum Worthy, Sallie Krawcheck, and Ashu Martha Agbornyenty are just a few of the voices within the Goalkeepers community who are using their voices, platforms, and talents to drive progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Their stories serve as a testament to the event’s mission: to imagine a world where we achieve the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals and to work together to make that world a reality.
