By Mark Newman, CEO, The Chemours Company
Six years ago, today, The Chemours Company (Chemours), was born. Since our founding, we’ve harnessed the power of our chemistry to advance modern society, create value for our customers, promote a culture that inspires our people, improve our communities, and set a new standard for responsible manufacturing. We’re a different kind of chemistry company, one that was born to power progress and to make a difference.
The world needs our chemistry to live better—and we take this responsibility very seriously. After all, our solutions power the products that people rely on every day, from cellphones, automobiles, and refrigeration, to medical devices, semiconductors, renewable energy storage, protective coatings, and more. And increasingly, our world needs more than just highly effective and advanced chemistries. It also needs these essential technologies to come with an unwavering commitment to sustainability. At Chemours, we embrace this mandate and see responsible innovation, production, and consumption as critical to a stronger and better future. We’re leading the way on responsible chemistry and developing more solutions to enable the next generation of sustainable products and processes that people around the world will use each day.
With products like our low global warming potential refrigerants, we’re building a more sustainable portfolio of products and setting the standard for responsible manufacturing while reimagining long-held paradigms in the chemical industry—but we are so much more than the products we produce. Three years ago, we published our first Corporate Responsibility Commitments (CRC) Report, which showcased ten bold goals Chemours is working to accomplish by 2030, all in support of the 2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Earlier this year, we pushed ourselves even further by committing to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, with a 60% absolute reduction of operations-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 as a marker of our progress. These targets, grounded in the needs of people and our planet, reflect our commitment to grow our business responsibly and sustainably. Anchored by Unshakeable Integrity, one of our five core values, our aim is to do the right thing—always.
Thanks to our Chemours family of 6,500 incredibly talented people around the world, I have every confidence in our ability to achieve our 10 CRC goals and so much more. At every level, we’re engaging and empowering our people to make decisions that make a difference for the company and the communities around us. We position every employee to realize their full potential in the company by providing flexibility, opportunity, and a place at the table where they can be their best self. Our employees are the best and brightest in the industry and they are energized and ready to write our next chapter of responsible growth. And with programs such as our Future of STEM Scholars Initiative, an industry-wide partnership providing scholarships and internships to students pursuing STEM education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, we’re fostering a next-generation workforce that is competitive, inclusive, and representative of people everywhere.
Today, I am honored to become the CEO of Chemours and to lead this inspiring company that I and so many others helped to build. Now together we’ll work hand-in-hand to realize our bright future and write the next chapter of Chemours. Guided by an ambitious vision and clear purpose, we will not be satisfied to only make products. Instead, we’ll strive to make life better for our customers, our communities, and the broader society we serve. Along the way we’re sure to face challenges, perhaps some we could not have imagined before. And in those moments, we’ll do what we do best, innovate and problem solve like the different kind of chemistry company we are: courageous, unafraid to lead, and firmly rooted in the idea that we were born to make a difference.
