For business owners, the pandemic and its economic effects have driven home the importance of an engaged workforce that buys into a clear business mission.

Amy Friedrich, president of U.S. Insurance Solutions for Principal, recently joined a Washington Post Live program, in a segment presented by Principal, “The Future of Small Business,” to discuss this and related business trends.

“Small business owners are putting more time into intentionally building their culture and making sure the engagement level and knowledge they have about their employees is really high,” she says.

Friedrich also outlined lasting changes to business spurred by the pandemic. Business owners who manage flexibility for employees while still providing a stable company culture can better position themselves for success, she says.

One thing Friedrich recommends for the long-term health of your business: “Learn from other business owners and take care of your employees.”

Watch the video for Friedrich’s full conversation with Elise Labott, a journalist and adjunct professor at American University in Washington, D.C.
