Just an hour outside of DC, adventure beckons in Charles County, Maryland. This rural escape from everyday city life offers more than 300 miles of shoreline along the Potomac River. Take a guided kayak tour through shipwrecks dating back to the Revolutionary War, or cast a line for bass and catfish in one of the county’s many public fishing areas. End the day with a sunset dinner and a taste of local seafood at one of the area’s waterfront restaurants.
Established in 1658, Charles County is also rich with the history that shaped the nation. The county has ties to the Underground Railroad, and is home to the Port Tobacco Village, one of Maryland’s largest international seaports in the years before the American Revolution. Visit historic sites like the African American Heritage House and the Thomas Stone National Historic Site to learn more about the stories that shaped Charles County.
