Just North of Washington, D.C., where city streets meet the mountains, Frederick, Maryland is a beer lover’s haven. It not only boasts Maryland’s largest craft brewery, but is also home to an impressive collection of beer brewing artisans. Whether you prefer a classic IPA or a daring chili infused beer, a farm to glass tasting is sure to be a great experience.
Maryland’s largest craft brewery, Flying Dog, is an excellent starting point. Considered one of the fastest-growing regional craft breweries in the mid-Atlantic, this location in the north area of Frederick offers tours and tastings that might better be described as an “experience,” with up to 20 beers on tap at any given time. The offerings change continuously, but there’s always an unusual, if not shocking brew waiting for you here. You can pair your beer with a bite from their onsite food truck or enjoy one of their popular festivals.
For a true farm to glass experience, take in the views and quaff a cool one at Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm. Just outside the town of Mount Airy, east of Frederick, this brewery specializes in classic beers made with Maryland hops. It’s got five varieties available year round and serves up several seasonal specialties. Milkhouse offers a diverse collection of brews in a picturesque farm setting.
Monocacy Brewing Company offers tours every Saturday showing how the beer is produced in the old Ebert’s Ice Cream plant in historic downtown Frederick. Beer for Brewer’s Alley, Frederick County’s original brewpub, is also made there. The tasting room offers sampling, full pours of draught beer and growler fills.
Visit the newly-opened Smoketown Brewing Station, which offers a unique atmosphere in the small railroad town of Brunswick on the Potomac River. The brewery and tasting room are located in a repurposed 1948 fire station where you can enjoy five different beers. Smoketown Brewing Station is open seven days a week for samples, full pints, or growlers to go.
If enjoying the outdoors and drinking craft beer sound like a winning combination, River & Trail Outfitters offers boat and brew tours throughout the warm weather months. The tour combines paddling on the Monocacy River with a tour and tasting at a local brewery. Visit River & Trail’s website for upcoming tour dates.
