Summer days are best spent outside. This summer, travelers looking to enjoy fresh air, natural landscapes and outdoor adventures should visit Somerset County, Maryland.
Located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore and nestled along the Chesapeake Bay, Somerset offers a wealth of outdoor attractions for sportsmen, nature lovers and families. At Sugar Water Manor, a cozy bed and breakfast situated on a 68-acre farm, visitors can get a taste of a rural lifestyle by feeding ducks, kayaking and viewing stunning sunsets.
Adventure seekers should visit Janes Island State Park, which boasts almost 3,000 acres of saltmarsh, more than 30 miles of water trails and miles of isolated pristine beaches. In addition to walking and kayaking trails, families can reserve campsites or waterside camper cabins to spend more time unplugged and enjoying nature.
Venture off the mainland of Somerset to explore Smith Island, Maryland’s only inhabited offshore island. Everett Landon, owner of the local touring company Experience Smith Island, offers an immersive boat tour that engages travelers in the history and culture of the island.
“We do a crab demonstration and a Smith Island layer cake demonstration,” said Landon. “At the end, you have your own cake to take home with you. That’s always a plus!”
Whether travelers are looking for thrilling outdoor adventures or simply to reconnect with nature, Somerset provides a beautiful landscape for all.
