In order to stay ahead of the artificial intelligence curve, Forrester cites these key steps for modernizing IT in order to drive AI:

1. Engage the lines of business on their AI needs.

Lines of business completely bypass IT departments 15% to 20% of the time on their AI initiatives. Aim to reduce silos, increase visibility into the full suite of AI initiatives across the organization and proactively drive AI conversations to become a trusted partner and invest in meeting the LOB’s needs.

2. Modernize your infrastructure for existing workloads.

64% of firms reported that outdated software was a challenge in driving AI initiatives. Automation and self-service will free up the resources that you need to support new AI initiatives. Data is the foundation for successful AI strategies — ensure that your data integration, database and data warehouses are ready to power AI initiatives.

3. Invest in infrastructure for AI at scale.

Invest in the infrastructure hardware required for successful AI initiatives. Machine learning, and especially deep learning, requires a new level of computational horsepower, as well as high-bandwidth, low-latency networking and storage. CIOs must invest in highly scalable, high-performance servers with accelerators to support the AI demands of the business.

4. Continuously build the business case for further AI investments.

When mature organizations invest more, they get more in return. Approximately half of businesses with an average spend of $36M in AI expect a return of up to 5x their investment. While not cheap, investing significant portions of the IT budget into new endeavors will benefit the business as a whole.
